Guys, just so you know. I don’t know if any of you are aware, but I’ve lived in a couple of places where the modern-day ‘olympics’ have been. I refuse to treat it as a proper name because I respect the original olympics; these do not. They use the name but have no other resemblance.
I just want to let you know, because some of you are such nice people, and I know this, and I know you probably aren’t aware of the fact that these ‘olympics’ are little more than a virulent parasite.
They are arranged typically by pay-offs and politicians, with the (false) promise that it will bring tremendous commerce to a city.
Instead, what usually happens is that humans and animals suffer (and usually even die) directly or indirectly because of the ‘olympics’ coming.
I have seen people kicked out of their homes, rental properties, and more and essentially made homeless with little to no warning thanks to these ‘olympics’. I have seen them, directly and indirectly, annihilate charities, shelters for homeless people and animals, and other non-commercial ventures. And I have seen them leave a flagging, struggling economy behind in a city they promised commercial benefit, knowing that it has virtually never been fulfilled in the entire history of this abomination calling itself the modern olympic games.
I have seen people killed because of the ‘olympics’, and not in inconsequential number.
I have seen people sued over the use of terms that these ‘olympics’ presume they can copyright, despite them being things like proper names of cities.
Most pitiful of all, I have seen merchants of these cities exploited — such as an old street vendor swindled out of upwards of $10,000 for a location promised to be ‘prime’, which was in fact situated far outside of all planned paths — by the money-sucking behemoth that is these ‘olympics’.
They give estimates they invent whole cloth, and they have almost never stuck to budgets, typically utilising almost twice as much as they had quoted, and rarely paying any fraction of it back.
It’s not something to be proud of. Yes, I’ve added it to tumblr saviour, no, I won’t have to see it (for the most part, since tumblr saviour doesn’t always catch things that aren’t tagged), but I also think that some of you really should know, it’s not something that I think is worth supporting.
Athletes, great. They can show off and compete in plenty of other events and forums. While I have a great love for ancient Greece and many of the cultural and social aspects of it, this has nothing to do with the original spirit of the olympics.
The modern ‘olympics’ are little more than a massive, exploitative shill that promises the world and doesn’t deliver. To a few athletes, it might mean corporate endorsements and being on the front of a cereal box. Is that really what you trained for? And is it worth all of the horrible things that this ‘event’ brings to any place it goes, like some sort of contagious, hateful disease?
I say, no.
And frankly I can always do without it.
Your tumblrs are your own, your blogs are your own, but you should be aware that this isn’t happy, beneficial entertainment. This is suffering, brought to your screens with the cheerful exploitation and destruction of the people of every city it perches, however briefly.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled blogging.

It’s the tribute to the NHS in the opening ceremony that got me. If you want to pay tribute to our health care system maybe you could start by not diverting billions of £s into the olympics.

There’s already been an article going around about Londen kicking out the Roma to make room for athlete housing. Sadly I don’t think many will hear about it. It’s tragic.
